“What does a food truck cost?” is a fully loaded question as it encompasses the entirety of a food truck business and not just the physical truck. The cost of purchasing a truck can range from $50k-$200k, from used to new.
Although the cheap end may seem enticing, it comes with a few hidden costs. Used trucks that have been recently on the road, may save you some money on permitting, however, there is a chance you will end up spending more to cover maintenance costs. Warranties may also be expired for used trucks. The additional cost of purchasing a used truck could entail permitting/inspection, aesthetic fixtures, deep cleaning costs for the kitchen and hood, and replacement of kitchen. The other issue of purchasing a used truck is reliability. Typically used trucks face reliability issues because they have been sold at the end of their life cycle. Some sellers will also avoid maintenance during the sale to save on costs.
New trucks are much more reliable and allow you the ability to build out according to exact specifications for your menu. You can also work with the builder to guarantee your truck will pass inspection. There will be a warranty available for a new truck and you have a higher chance of financing a new truck.
If neither option fits your price point, you could also consider a lease to own truck.
Other costs which need to be considered when getting into the food truck business are insurance, commissary, menu, design, social networking/promotional items, cost of goods sold, employee costs, and payroll and sales tax. This does not encompass all costs for items needed to operate and breakdown/repair and replacement costs.
