It depends what state your food truck is operating in. So the answer is yes and no. Yes, if your food truck can sell alcohol if your state allows mobile food units to do so and you attain all the proper permits and licenses to do so. For those that live in a city where you can sell alcohol out of your food truck, just know that selling alcohol out of a food truck is a complicated and expensive process. Not in the sense of serving to the end consumer but in permitting and licensing. To find out if you can serve in your city, reach out to local and state authorities.
No, if your state does not allow it. We will specifically be focusing on the State of Texas in this article. And in Texas, mobile food units cannot sell alcohol because they do not meet the minimum requirements of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC).
TABC permitting laws mandates that a business must have a Retail Dealer’s License in order to serve any sort of alcohol. This means that if sold to the consumer, it cannot be for resale and there must be adequate seating for the consumers. The adequate seating alone eliminates 99% of the possibility of selling alcohol from a food truck. The 1% possibility is if you have a regular location with adequate seating and two working toilets hooked up to the city’s water supply. If you are in the 1%, you would still have to go through licensing to serve alcohol. Licensing to serve alcohol costs upwards of several thousands of dollars.
Although alcohol pairs great with most foods, there are state and city limitations to creating that perfect drink-meal pair.
